Dog Chew Safety: What to Look for When Selecting Chews for Your Canine Companion
As a responsible dog owner, it's important to prioritise the safety and well-being of your furry friend. One aspect of their health that often gets overlooked is their dental hygiene. Providing your dog with appropriate chews can keep them entertained and support good oral health. However, not all dog chews are created equal, and it's crucial to choose ones that are safe and suitable for your dog.
1. Size and Hardness
When selecting a chew, consider your dog's size and chewing habits. It should be appropriate for their breed and age. A useful rule of thumb used by many vets is the thumbnail test: if the chew does not give at all when you press it with your thumbnail, it may be hard enough to risk cracking a tooth. Very hard chews such as antlers and some hard cheese chews are the usual culprits.
2. Natural Ingredients and Clear Labelling
Opt for chews made from natural ingredients with a composition you can actually read. Avoid products with artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Good manufacturers publish their analytical breakdown, protein, fat, moisture and fibre, and will tell you plainly whether a flavour comes from meat or from a flavouring. Many will not, which is itself informative.
3. Avoid Potential Choking Hazards
Always consider the size and shape of the chew to minimise the risk of choking. Pick one large enough that your dog cannot fit the whole thing in their mouth. Watch the last piece in particular: a chew worn down to a small stub is the point at which most swallowing incidents happen. Supervise your dog while they are chewing and take the stub away when it gets small.
4. Consult with Your Veterinarian
If you're unsure which chews are suitable for your dog, consult your veterinarian. They can provide guidance based on your dog's specific needs, such as any dental issues or dietary restrictions.
By following these guidelines, you can make sure the chews you select are safe and suitable. A happy and healthy dog starts with proper care and attention to their overall well-being.
