PLUTOS INGREDIENTS

PLUTOS chew is a treat that many pet owners have discovered to be beneficial for their furry friends. It is a unique, lactose-free, low-fat milk protein chew that comes from a Madeira Island cheese recipe, reworked specifically for dogs.

100% grain free, and what we use instead

Every PLUTOS product is 100% grain free. There are no grains of any kind in any chew in the range. For owners avoiding grains, that is not a variant to look for, it is simply how all of our chews are made.

Grain is cheap and it is what a lot of chews use to bulk out a recipe and carry fibre. We use fruit and root instead. Depending on the recipe, the fibre and carbohydrate come from ingredients such as apple flour, sweet potato and cassava flour, with pea protein alongside them for plant protein. Those ingredients do the same job grain would do, and they bring their own nutrients with them.

Lactose free

One of the main reasons why PLUTOS is beneficial for dogs is that it is lactose-free. Lactose is a sugar found in milk, and some dogs cannot digest it properly. This can lead to digestive problems such as diarrhoea and vomiting. PLUTOS is an excellent alternative for lactose intolerant dogs, as it does not contain any lactose.

High protein, low fat

The cheese is made from milk protein, which is a healthy source of protein for dogs. Protein is essential for building and repairing muscles and helps maintain a healthy coat and skin. The standard PLUTOS chew is 55% crude protein and just 2% fat, so it provides an excellent source of protein without the fat found in other types of cheese.

It contains all the essential amino acids that dogs need. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, which is essential for muscle growth, repair, and maintenance. Essential amino acids are those that cannot be synthesised by the body and must be obtained through the diet.

In addition to essential amino acids, PLUTOS chew is also a source of calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Calcium is also necessary for muscle and nerve function, blood clotting, and enzyme activity.

Apple flour, and why it is in there

Apple is an excellent fibre source. Fibre is important for maintaining a healthy digestive system and helps dogs feel full. By using apple flour in the chew, the overall fibre content is increased without reaching for a grain.

Mostly human grade, and never smoked or baked

The ingredients are mostly human grade. They are mixed and pasteurised at our own factory in Caniçal, Madeira, and then naturally air dried. Nothing is smoked and nothing is baked, which sets it apart from most hard chews on the shelf.

A note on the flavours, and why they differ by country

In our European range the savoury flavours are made with real animal protein. Chicken means chicken, beef means beef, bacon means bacon, and salmon means salmon.

That is not true everywhere, and it is worth explaining why. Some countries apply strict import rules on animal proteins in pet food, and Australia is the clearest example. For those markets we reformulate the same chew with a yeast-based flavour so the product can be imported legally. Same base, same grain-free milk protein chew, different flavour system to satisfy the local regulator.

The practical takeaway for you as an owner: read the label on the pack you are holding. The composition printed there is the authority for the market you bought it in.

In short

PLUTOS is a healthy dog treat. It is lactose-free, 100% grain free, low in fat, and built on milk protein with apple flour, sweet potato or cassava for fibre and pea protein alongside. PLUTOS chews are a complementary pet food, so give them as a reward rather than a meal, and always supervise your dog while they chew.
